How To Cook Poppy Seed Onion Rings?

Poppy seed onion rings

I don't always feel like making a batter when I fancy some onion rings, so this crisp flour coating makes an ideal alternative. The poppy and mustard seeds provide a good contrast to the soft texture of the onion.

Serve 2

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes

  • Oil to deep-fry

  • 85 g (3 oz) plain flour

  • 2 Tbsp poppy seeds

  • 1 Tbsp white mustard seeds

  • Salt and black pepper

  • 2 large onions, cut into 1.25 cm (1/2 in) slices

  • A little milk

  1. Heat the oil to 180C/350F in a large pa n or a deep-fryer.

  2. Mix together all the dry ingredients. Separate the onion slices into rings.

  3. Dip the rings into a little milk, then toss them in the spiced flour. Prepare the rings in about 3 batches, just before frying them.

  4. Carefully lower the onion rings, a few at a time, into the hot oil. Fry for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown, then scoop them out with a slotted spoon and drain on crumpled kitchen paper. Repeat until all the rings are fried.

  5. Serve as a side dish, or on a bed of salad leaves as a quick snack.
